I keep on feeling the impact of Akira Sky’s “Block My Number” after hearing it. From her base in Brooklyn and a history in LA’s music scene, this singer has released a beautiful dream pop track that sounds like a deep nighttime conversation. Being someone who looks for songs that really touch you, this one blows me away, with its raw, dark and intense vibe.
Gentle plucking of the acoustic guitar at the start of the track makes you feel pulled into Akira’s world. Her singing comes in softly but with a lot of feeling, expressing her unfulfilled desires and pain. You can feel that her heart is hurting, speaking right to your soul about a lost love she can’t let go of. The gentle rhythm makes it feel far away, in keeping with the sense of not fully answering the questions and lush keyboards and backing vocals fill the soundscape with a dreamy atmosphere. The music is catchy pop with a folk touch and a touch of alt-pop, blended with the depth of Janelle Monáe’s words and the fun of Remi Wolf.
It surprises me how much it feels like I’m talking about myself. Stages have sparkled since Akira, a multi-talented musician, shared her talent early in life. The song’s mood keeps growing with the story and I could relate to how moving on feels clumsy. Remembering sad times, I wanted to be able to block my memories. The video, led by Luiza Botelho and filmed around Manhattan and Brooklyn, goes wonderfully with the song—moody, restless and with Pablo Morais starring, who adds to the song’s quiet falling apart.
To me, “Block My Number” is meant for private road trips, as you let your emotions fall on you again and again. Akira Sky has crafted a beautiful song, with raw feelings and skilled artistry, making it stay with you. I can’t wait for her debut EP—she leaves a big impression on me.
