Thistroubledsoul by Highroad No. 28 is sitting with you--in a silent heavy way. It is not a song that pushes to get its point, but it gradually pulls you along the way and holds you back. Being the second single before their next album The Will to Endure, it is reflective and weathered, as the band takes a look at where they are. The alternative rock core here is definitely different, it is darker, more inward, and one can not help but be sucked into that mood.
The singing is deep in the corners where it is a bit low-key and passionate. They do not control the track, but they do not have to. They are seated within the song, with a silent sadness which is not dramatic but true-to-life. The tune is not overwhelmed but is repeated enough to get it in your head, as the guitars do much of the emotional work. They are inflated and deflated calmly, supported by a low, brooding bass, and soft drums that hold everything in place and solid.
The personal feeling of it is what is interesting. Andrew JC takes care of all this, and such a one-man strategy adds to the track a certain dramatic emphasis, almost cinematic. It feels like a band coming back after some time out without attempting to sound younger and louder but rather more confident of what they want to convey. Thistroubledsoul is not a one-liner or instant hit, but it will go down a treat given the breathing room. This is a no-brainer and well-spent time especially to those who appreciate dark and philosophic alternative rock.
